Pocket city guide : Tolfa

Tolfa, Lazio, Italy

Tolfa is a amazing town that raises in the middle of the Tolfa Mountains and can be reached along a beautiful road that runs through wild hills where you will find horsesdonkeys and cows grazing.

Where is it.
Tolfa is a small town of medieval origins located about 100 Kms from Rome and just 30 Kms from Santa Marinella (my place).

What to do.
Half a day is enough to visit Tolfa and to fall in love with it.
You can have a drink at the bar in the main square sitting in front of an amazing view of the mountains, then go on foot up to the ancient Rocca (the rock).
The Catana bag
Tolfa is famous for its handmade production of the "Catana" bag, the leather bag that has been used for centuries by the local cowboys called "Butteri". Later, it was among all the famous gadgets during the decade of 60s.So, don't esitate to buy one, it costs about 50euros and lasts forever.
You can also have your dinner in one of the typical local restaurants : pasta, meat, vegetables and good wine will make you happy for sure.

When to go.
Tolfa can be visited during every period of the year, but spring and fall give their best because of the colors of the nature in those periods.

How to reach it.
By car from Rome : Via Aurelia (SS1) or A12 Highway, direction Civitavecchia, exit at S.Marinella SUD and take the local way to Tolfa (20Kms)
By Train from Rome :  any train of the ROMA-CIVITAVECCHIA line, then take the COTRAL bus from Civitavecchia bus station to Tolfa.
By Bus from Rome : COTRAL Line direct to Tolfa
